Verdict day in the Bahadır Grammeşin case
“Throughout the 10-year-long process, we have never given up on our legal struggle or our quest for justice. Indeed, at this stage, we are waging a legal battle with the clear aim that everyone responsible will face punishment. No opinion had been submitted prior to the previous hearing. We were expecting the defendant’s lawyer to present his defence and for a verdict to be delivered. However, the defendant’s lawyer requested additional time to submit a written statement. For this reason, a verdict could not be delivered. A sentence for murder was sought for Hasan Özcan. It is our hope that the court will rule in this manner. However long the proceedings may take, we will continue our fight to ensure that everyone responsible for the incident that led to Grammeşin’s death and the life-threatening injuries sustained by his friends is held to account.”
ON TRIAL FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER
The defendant Özcan, who fled whilst the case was pending, was apprehended in Albania in 2024, extradited to Turkey, and subsequently remanded in custody. Özcan, who is on trial for the “murder” of Grammeşin, is also facing charges of “attempted murder” in relation to Grammeşin’s friend, Çağrı Konca.
